Australia has a population of approximately 20million people, 25% of which were born outside of Australia. English is the main language, but Australia is a multi-cultural country, so it’s not unusual to walk down a city street and hear people speaking Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Irish, Vietnamese or Italian as their first language. In fact, Melbourne is the largest Greek City outside of Greece and the home of Greek Immigration to Australia.
Australians have a passion for abbreviations and slang that can take the first-time visitor a while to fathom out.
